This was known as the Oslo peace process, named for the city where the secret talks took place. Micha Bar-Am/Magnum Photos Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir of Israel during the the Middle East peace conference in Madrid, 1991. Margalit: All the Israeli leaders who negotiated for peace, starting with Rabin, were in a weak political position. Dajani: With the First Intifada, and then subsequently Madrid and Oslo, Palestinians suddenly see the possibility of agency. But what’s important to understand is that the notion of peace for Rabin, and for most Israelis, is that peace is a lack of violence from the other side.

This frame grab from video footage taken by AFPTV shows people out in the open in Marrakesh September 9, 2023, following a 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Morocco. A rare, powerful earthquake struck Morocco late Friday night, killing hundreds of people and damaging buildings from villages in the Atlas Mountains to the historic city of Marrakech. In 1960, a magnitude 5.8 tremor struck near the Moroccan city of Agadir and caused thousands of deaths. The Agadir quake prompted changes in construction rules in Morocco, but many buildings, especially rural homes, are not built to withstand such tremors. In 2004, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake near the Mediterranean coastal city of Al Hoceima left more than 600 dead.

But five months later, the overall number of people filing refugee claims in Canada has risen instead of falling. But it has sought to discourage those applying for asylum, chiefly through an agreement with the U.S. under which each country turns back asylum seekers. Asylum seekers are drawn by Canada's reputation for swifter processing and greater acceptance of asylum applications compared to the U.S. But overall, the number of asylum seekers entering Canada has surged. People applying at airports comprised about a third of all refugee claims made in July, up from about 16% in March.

But Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani snatched IPL rights away in a $2.9 billion bid last year, and then streamed games for free. Soon, Disney subscribers fled - out of 61 million users in October, roughly 21 million had left by July. It retains digital streaming rights but last year licensed the TV broadcast rights to Indian's Zee Entertainment (ZEE.NS) for around $1.5 billion, a source said. In the United States, ad-free Disney+ streaming service subscription rates are set to rise by 27% to $13.99 per month. By contrast in India, Disney+ Hotstar service costs $3.62 a month.

"We are sons of Jenin," said one of the Islamic Jihad fighters, who identified himself as Abu Salah. Islamic Jihad is a Palestinian faction sworn to destroying Israel and replacing it with an Islamic state. Many of the Palestinian attackers who have killed Israelis in Israel and the West Bank came from the area. Sometimes the transfers involve criminals and sometimes legitimate or semi-legitimate businesses help to move funds to the West Bank, the militant sources said. Much of the weaponry used by the Jenin fighters comes from Israel itself, stolen and sold on through criminal gangs, Israeli officials say.

But Peter Rawlinson, the CEO of Tesla rival EV-maker Lucid, isn't convinced the tech is a shoo-in. Rawlinson told Bloomberg in an interview that the hype around the charger is "rather bizarre." While automaker after automaker signs on to use Tesla's well-regarded charging technology, one rival executive isn't completely sold yet. "What we're really comparing is, is it a screw cap or is it a cork on the bottle, not the quality of the wine," Rawlinson told Bloomberg. "Whoever controls this — if it isn't an open, impartial standard, if it's owned by one company — has access to a lot of consumer data," the executive told Bloomberg.

US officials have said they are in “close communication” with US citizens and “actively facilitating” their departure from Sudan. Those who spoke to CNN also pushed back on the argument made by US officials that they had warned Americans not to be in Sudan. Other Americans are attempting to flee Sudan through Egypt, but those who spoke to CNN warned of a growing humanitarian catastrophe at that border. After a 36-hour journey, his parents had not been able to cross the border into Egypt, Imad told CNN Wednesday evening. Imad said when he contacted the State Department, “they essentially said that there are other cases ahead of us that are similar.
N'DJAMENA, April 19 (Reuters) - Chad's army stopped and disarmed a Sudanese contingent of 320 soldiers who entered the West African country on Monday, Defence Minister Daoud Yaya Brahim said on Wednesday. Brahim told a press conference that the confrontation between the Sudanese might create new waves of refugees and added that maintaining security would become difficult. Chad's government closed its border with Sudan on Saturday and called for calm amid an apparent coup attempt in Khartoum by Sudan's main paramilitary group. The West African country's defense minister said that the country had hosted more than 400,000 Sudanese refugees in the past. The movement of asylum-seekers into Canada from the United States has picked up since Canada lifted COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in late 2021, a trend mirroring global displacement. More than 39,000 refugees entered Canada last year via unofficial crossings, the vast majority via Roxham Road linking Quebec and New York State. Canada is a signatory to the international Refugee Convention under which Canada must adjudicate most refugee claims with limited exceptions. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Trudeau said his government had been trying to "close" Roxham Road for years by rewriting the STCA. Poilievre referenced a COVID-19 policy under which Canada turned back asylum-seekers crossing between ports of entry, a policy that was being challenged in court when it was rescinded.

The Virginia school district where a 6-year-old allegedly intentionally shot a teacher on Friday has had three instances of gun violence on district property in the past 17 months. Newport News Public Schools consists of 26,500 students, and includes three early childhood centers, 24 elementary schools, seven middle schools and five high schools, according to the district's website. Newport News Public Schools Superintendent George Parker III did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Hanan Daoud, who also has children within the school district, agrees. Daoud told NBC News she recalled feeling "paralyzed" after hearing that there had been a shooting in the school district on Friday.
Optimism is revving up at Cowen over the investment potential of companies focused on lithium-ion batteries. Ultimately, Daoud said the U.S.-based lithium-ion battery industry stands to gain, especially as headwinds resolve and production catches up to demand. Battery swelling has been an inhibitor to lithium-ion batteries. Though Envoix is considered to have the most commercialization potential, Daoud said he is also watching FREYR Battery , SES AI and Solid Power . The report contained initial investment opinions on three of the stocks: FREY (outperform), SES (market perform) and SLDP (market perform).
Swizz Beatz and Timbaland have settled their lawsuit with Triller, after suing the service last month for $28 million, an amount they contended was owed after their sale of Verzuz to the service in March 2021. Specific terms of the settlement were not revealed in the late Thursday announcement, beyond a promise that “the settlement will increase the ownership stake given to the artists that Timbaland and Swizz Beatz brought to Triller as part of the original deal.”“Verzuz has always been a platform that is by the artists, for the artists and with the people,” Swizz Beatz and Timbaland said in a statement. This is a victorious moment in the Triller and Verzuz relationship as we march together toward the public markets. Swizz Beatz and Timbaland (legal names: Kasseem Daoud Dean and Timothy Mosley) both received equity in the sale, along with 43 artists who had participated in the program. The joint announcement Thursday said, “Swizz Beatz and Timbaland remain proud of the platform that they created with Verzuz and its acquisition by Triller due to the company’s willingness to celebrate and showcase artists.”Follow NBCBLK on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
